Circular No 821

Newsletter for alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 29 July 2017 No. 821
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,
Re. ASAA News
This is the last formal news that I have on our association.
The other news I have sent in various Circulars are those that I filter from individuals in from their emails
Each day we are less and maybe the only way would be through Video Conferencing, like in big corporations.

From: "dgurley@jdsellier.com" <dgurley@jdsellier.com>
Dear Ladislao et al ;
I am pleased to inform you that today I received from the Registrar of Companies the original Certificate of Incorporation of the newly formed Non-profit corporation called “Abbey School Alumni Association”. At long last we have a formal legal body with an identity separate and apart from its members and with a legal framework under which to operate. I think that the “old boys” will be pleased to know.
A copy of the Certificate of Incorporation (which bears a March 22, 2010 date) Articles of Incorporation and Notice of Directors are attached for your record and information.
In the coming weeks I propose that the Directors named in the articles should call a meeting to inter alia :-
1.     appoint you as an additional  Director and  Member,
2.    appoint a Corporate Secretary,
3.    make a By-law relating generally to the conduct of the affairs of the company (along the lines of the model by-law as set out in the Companies Regulations, 1997 for a typical Non-profit company),
4.    make banking arrangements and
5.    transact any other business.
If you are interested I can send you a copy of the model general by-law set out in the Regulations. I expect that there may be some discussion as to classes of membership and membership fees (perhaps only nominal). Please let me know if you have any thoughts or suggestions on the way forward.
Fondest regards and best wishes,
Dennis Gurley

Anthony,
I’m sure you’ve enjoyed the opportunity as a Judge at ITLOS and that you’ve gained valuable experience in dealing with complex disputes regarding official boundaries, etc.
But does your suggested resignation before 2020 and your previous resignation as a Judge in T&T automatically debar you from once again assuming such a prominent position back home?
I should think not.
I believe you have a lot to offer our people and our country once again.
Good luck in your decision-making and here’s wishing you well in the next phase of your life.
Nigel

Gentlemen,
I sincerely appreciate the great effort to update the Abbey School, MSB, data base
Thanks very much.
My term as a Judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea(ITLOS), Hamburg, Germany, ends on 30th September 2020.
I noted with sadness that several of my colleagues at Mount have passed on.
I also observe that many have retired.
I had to accept early retirement as a Judge her in T&T when I was elected in September 2003 to ITLOS.
Perhaps the time has come for me to resign from ITLOS before September 2020.

Gentlemen,
Here is the latest MSB DATABASE with updates.
We had Tuco - sports coach, who passed away 5th, June 2017.
And recently Ian Lezama passed away on 8th, July.
Ian came to the Mount sometime in the mid 70's and was left in 1979-80.
Here is the attached database.
I included Ian in the database as he was not recorded before.

Hello, Brian,
Did you know you can claim to have visited (more than once) the fourth least visited country in the world?
You beat Ron, who only visited us once.
I don’t think any other Mount Boy ever has.
Keep well.
Don

14-04-2017 15:38:20: Ladislao: The 3pm hour is sacred, especially of Fridays, because this is the hour that Jesus died on the cross for our sins on #GoodFriday. Our Lord taught St. Faustina how to honor his hour of mercy by reciting this special prayer:
"I remind you, My daughter, that as often as you hear the clock strike the third hour, immerse yourself completely in My mercy, adoring and glorifying it; invoke its omnipotence for the whole world, and particularly for poor sinners; for at that moment mercy was opened wide for every soul. In this hour you can obtain everything for yourself and for others for the asking; it was the hour of grace for the whole world - mercy triumphed over justice." (Diary of St. Faustina, 1572)
14-04-2017 15:39:55: Mt Berment Joseph: Thanks for that: never knew/don't remember.

OUR ABBEY SCHOOL WATER SUPPLY - WHAT WAS THE NAME OF THE STREAM/RIVER?
ANTONI MICKIEWICZ <amickiew@att.net>
Jul 19 at 5:16 PM
Same general sounding name with 2 different spellings recalled by 2 old boys....
Big Joe Michael Azar offered Catchycam...
Garnet Diaz offered Katchikam.
Whatever its name...it did provide all of our water supply...and do remember droughts when we had to conserve water by eliminating the frequency of showering...odor was foul in those times.
Here is a recent video that shows water supply modernization....unfortunately it does not give us the name of the river.
Do remember the path that took us from behind our school to the reservoir....walked it many times.
Water was not treated in any way in our days.
Below is link to video regarding recent modernization project.
Question of the Day: What is the name of the river/stream that ran at the bottom of the ravine at the back of our school?
It ran through the orange/grapefruit grove and eventually down to Tunapuna?
Before the pool opened, some of us would occasionally "escape" from the playing field and take a dip in it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------.
The pool was Katchikam, as I recall, the stream I can't remember.
That I did not know never even heard about it cheers
Nice clear pool,..cool water,..great on a hot steamy day,..a rock we used to jump off of,..about 10 Ft...and with the stream,..it was constantly filtered and replenished...:)...
That area was off limits in my time because you guys abused it ha ha
It's somewhere down behind the Tennis courts,..about a 10 to 15 minute hike down the trail,..don't remember the exact trail,..after all,..it's been 60+ years since I've been there..hahaha..:)..
I use to go and get host pieces from a novice nun in training ha ha then I got called to the office and well I was banned from that entire area ha ha
Yuh sure she was ah Nun,...or a None?? hahaha...:);;
None for me ha ha, Bobo told me I don't want to hear you going there again ha ha
I know that life there was tough for us Young'uns at the time,.. but there were also some fun and at times funny situations,.. oh well ...those were the days my friends we thought they'd never end..:(...:)...

Good George, but I have not hunted your information because I did not know that it is ready.
You could have sent it to me to be included in the Circular. I would have mentioned that you are the author.
I spend about six hours on each short Circular.
This is because I prepare photos, do research etc.
Maybe you do not want me to continue?? As without news there is no Circular.
I am joking, Ladislao

Hi Ladislao
The work that you have done and continue to do is priceless, challenging and very value adding. Not sure that everyone understands what it takes to put one of these Circulars together. This was even more difficult during the years when you were working full-time and had many additional personal and family responsibilities to deal with.
Our culture has changed significantly from what it was at the time we were at the Mount. Today we have very short attention spans in the 24/7 cycle of "Breaking News". There does not seem to be any value to stop and reflect on the past....or in the case of the "Old Boys"......many of us who are still around have probably forgotten many of our experiences that took place 30-70 years ago...depending on when we attended.
New technology makes it easier for some of us today to communicate "instantly".....we see that in FaceBook (FB), Whatsapp and perhaps other means like Twitter. But even in those there is limited participation.....MSB FaceBook page has only about 140 members or so and not every one of them reads every posting. I am guessing that about 20% of these members will glance at every posting.
On the Wikipedia entry that I shared with you in my earlier note, I experienced a similar situation like you do in your Circulars when you request for new inputs. I posted it in FB asking for upgrades and expanding its content based on when someone attended.....guess how many responses were received?
I thank and love you for everything that you have done and continue to do for us who are still interested and have a great passion for that part of our formative years that has impacted the rest of our lives.
As the French famously say "C'est la Vie" and we did in Venezuela "MaƱana",

11-04-2017 Ramsahai Winston: Found a similar leaf in the Mexican supermarket. Ron let's turn back the clock
11-04-2017 Cantore Oscar: Rerun azizul. Need to update
11-04-2017 Kenny Azizul: I did shit I am deleting a lot of crap  but sending them around before I delete
11-04-2017 Berment Joseph: Para mi Callaloo must have coconut milk, pumpkin, fine thyme, salted meat and crab to b authentic.
11-04-2017 Kenny Azizul: Salted meat ?
11-04-2017 Moffie Edgar: Salvador there is no such salted meat in kalaloo....unless you want to use pig tale instead of crab.....but most use is crab...
11-04-2017 Coscarart Salvador: Hola Roberto bienbenid crab is best
11-04-2017 Berment Joseph: The original Calallo always had salted pig tail or salted salt beef less frequently AND crab. In recent years, the recipe has changed to include beef to accommodate some Christian denominations, Rastarfarians, and Moslems   but  if you want to accommodate everyone you have to leave salt meat out altogether. I prefer the original recipe and if you read a good cook book that is over 60 years old, there will be no dispute. Edgar, You are wrong.
12-04-2017 Gomes Ian: Some people use the ham bone in callaloo which i prefer. Salt meat or pig tail is also traditional. Crab came on the scene after and while some prefer crab to me a ham bone callaloo is "D Best".
12-04-2017 Berment Joseph: Possibly, the challenge is that ordinary people only eat ham with bone at Christmas time.
12-04-2017 Gomes Ian: I does keep it and break it up into at least 3 pieces to use in at least 3 pot. Then is salt meat or pig tail till next xmas.
12-04-2017 Zanelli Enrique: Salvador need Roberto Bodingtons nr to add to chat
12-04-2017 Ramsahai Winston: Abbey boys cook book in the making Add Chardon Beni to the mix Ham bone is a surprise one
12-04-2017 Gomes Ian: Whaaaaaaat!
12-04-2017 Ramsahai Winston: Bring a sample this Christmas Ian
12-04-2017 Gomes Ian: Whaaaaaaat! Dat and d Garlic Pork (Cavanadage) doe leave meh house boi. I doe cook dem ting for anybody. Jes meh family. All yuh could call meh selfish all all yuh want. I greedy when it come to dat.
